DOT SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
DOT regulations are listed in the United States Code of Federal Regulations Title 49 Subtitle B Chapter V – National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The parts that are related to importation and vehicle standards are parts 400 to 999.
DOT has a list of vehicles that can be imported and modified to meet US DOT standards. The list is called the vehicle eligibility list and it is listed on NHTSA’s website. The list consists of vehicles eligible to be importer however they still need to be modified to meet US standards. If there is a vehicle that is not listed in the list it can be imported if a registered Importer petitions the administration to be able to import the vehicle. The petition process is a lengthy process and once the petition is granted the vehicle needs to be modified to comply with the standards and G&K can obtain approval. For historical, technological and or low production vehicles there is a process for importation which is show & display and this also can be obtained by G&K.
